MP Zimmer Pleased with the Result of Vote on Bill C-246

OTTAWA – Bob Zimmer, Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies and Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Outdoor Caucus, voted against Bill C-246 the Modernizing Animal Rights Act which was defeated 198-84.

“I am pleased that Bill C-246 was defeated by strong opposition on all sides of the House of Commons,” said Mr. Zimmer. “While there are areas of this bill that I am supportive of, some amendments to the Criminal Code were very concerning, specifically interpretive language that could criminalize historic and normal activities of hunting, fishing, farming and trapping.”

Canada already has strong animal protection legislation which was strengthened in 2008 by Bill S-203 which strengthened penalties for those who harm animals.

“I want to especially thank my Parliamentary Outdoor Caucus Co-Chair Yvonne Jones, MP for Newfoundland and Labrador, fellow outdoor advocates Robert Sopuck, MP and Gudie Hutchings, MP for all their efforts to see that hunters, anglers, farmers and trappers livelihoods are maintained.”
