Statement by MP Zimmer Regarding Release of the Liberal’s Blanket Handgun Ban Report

OTTAWA – Bob Zimmer, Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies and Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Outdoor Caucus, released the following statement regarding the release of the Liberal’s engagement report on a proposed blanket handgun ban:

“The results laid out in this report make it clear that Canadians have no interest in pursuing a blanket handgun ban. In fact, of the over 134,000 online questionnaires that were completed as part of this report, 78 per cent stated that they believed the government should focus their efforts on limiting illicit handguns. I believe that this overwhelming result is due to the fact that Canadians are well aware that we have some of the most stringent lawful handgun ownership requirements in the world that involve safety training and safe use.

“With these results, it is time for the Liberal government to end their continued targeting of Canada’s law-abiding firearms owners and focus on measures that actually take firearms out of the hands of criminals.

“As a firearms owner myself, I will continue to vigorously oppose a blanket firearms ban that would only make criminals out of our lawful, highly-vetted firearms owners and push for common sense solutions that focus on those who illegally obtain firearms and use them to commit violence.”
